Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free via slight slopes.
  • The approach is from the shopping parade and Zephaniah Square.
  • Howell has three entrances, two entrances provide step-free access via varying degrees of slopes with one stepped entrance. The most accessible entrance is the main entrance on the north side of the building.
  • The main entrance is signed 'Howell'.
    The south and west entrances are unnamed.
  • The main entrance provides step-free access with a very easy slope to the ground floor lobby area of Howell building.
  • The west entrance has sloped access to the ground floor west stairwell.
    The south entrance has stepped access to the ground floor south stairwell.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors.
  • There is a very slight slope along the corridor on floor 1 leading to computer laboratory 138.
  • Access to Howell Theatre is via a separate entrance on the west of Howell Building.
  • Floor surfaces along circulation routes are hard and smooth or carpeted and smooth.
  • There are resting areas in some lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There are some automatic and manual doors to access stairwells and corridors.

    • Toilets with adaptations are located on floor 1, 2 and 3 however only floor 3 is for student and visitors.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • There is also a toilet with adaptations for visitors and students in the theatre area of the building.
    • The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on floor 1, 2 and 3 however only floor 3 are for student and visitors.
    • There are also standard toilets for visitors and students in the theatre area of the building.

Campus Car Park

    • The car park is located along the Campus North Loop Road.
    • The car park is open air/surface.
    • The car park surface consists of tarmac.
    • There are 9 designated Blue Badge parking bays available.
    • The Blue Badge bays are clearly marked.
    • The surveyed Blue Badge parking bay dimensions are 240cm (width) x 470cm (depth).
    • There is a marked zone to one side but not at the rear.
    • The width of the marked zone is 120cm.
    • There is a dropped kerb with tactile paving from the designated Blue Badge parking.
    • The nearest buildings to the car park are the Biology Annexe, Howell, the Design and Print Service (Press Building), the Heinz Wolff building, Bragg and Quad North.
    • This car park is also the nearest with Blue Badge parking bays for the Lecture Centre.

Entrance (Main Entrance)

  • This entrance is located on the north side of the building.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via a very easy slope at the entrance.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 120cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 99cm.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located in the ground floor lobby of the main entrance.
  • The distance from the entrance is 6m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • G, 1, 2 and 3 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a low visual contrast.
  • The lift does not have a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 525kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have a high visual contrast and tactile markings.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 82cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 108cm (width) x 100cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have a high visual contrast and tactile markings.
  • All of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located in the ground floor lobby of the main entrance.
  • G, 1, 2 and 3 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20 steps between floors.
  • The steps are unmarked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are not easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm .
  • The height of the highest step is 16cm.
  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.

Toilet with Adaptations (Floor 3)

    • The distance from the lift is 6m.
    • The most accessible route to the toilet has step-free level access and a lift.
    • There is step-free level access into the facility.
    • There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
    • The door opens outwards and has a high visual contrast.
