Introduction

• This guide gives access information on York City Walls both from the ground where they can be viewed and along the walls themselves.
• At 3.4 kilometres, the walls are the most complete medieval town walls in England.
• There are five main bars or gateways, one Victorian gateway, one postern (a small gateway) and 45 towers.
• Access onto the walls is predominantly stepped and signs do advise that they are not suitable for wheelchair users.
• This is due to steps along the walls and unguarded sections, occasionally with cross slopes.
• There is a very detailed "York City Walls Trail" map (shown opposite) on the Friends of York Walls website which was used to help produce this access guide.
• The map primarily illustrates step free viewing routes around the walls for people who may find accessing the walls difficult.
• It marks a lot of the main access points and car parks that are referenced in this guide.

Getting Here By Public Transport

• York Station is located just outside the City Walls on the western side and is accessed from Station Road.
• There is an access point onto the walls at the junction of Station Rise and Station Road which is approximately 270 metres from the Station.

• The City Walls are well served by bus stops which are located throughout the city centre.
• There are bus stops within 200 metres of most access points onto the walls.

Getting Here By Car

• The City Walls are located in the centre of York. York is just 20 minutes from the M1/M62 motorway network. Because of its historic layout, York is very susceptible to traffic congestion, especially during morning and evening peak times. To alleviate this York City Council recommend using the Park & Ride sites.

• There are many car parks located throughout the city centre.
• Three of the most convenient for the York City Walls are; Nunnery Lane Car Park, St Georges Field Car Park and Foss Bank Car Park. Those 3 are detailed in this access guide.

• This car park is located in Nunnery Lane, close to Micklegate Bar.
  
• Parking is not free for all users.
  
• Parking is free for Blue Badge holders.

• There are 10+ Blue Badge parking bays within the car park.

St George's Field Car Park

• This car park is located off Tower Street, between the River Ouse and River Foss.
  
• Parking is not free for all users.
  
• Parking is free for Blue Badge holders.
  
• This car park is between Baile Hill and Fishergate Postern Tower and close to the York Castle Museum and Clifford's Tower.
  
• The car park type is open air.
  
• Parking spaces for Blue Badge holders do not need to be booked in advance.
  
• There are 6 Blue Badge parking bays within the car park.
  
• The dimensions of the Blue Badge parking bays is 350cm x 500cm (11ft 6in x 16ft 5in).
  
• The car park surface is tarmac.
  
• There is a toilet block within the car park that has accessible and standard toilet facilities.
  
• There is sloped access to the pavement in Tower Street from this car park.
  
• The slope is steep and the pavement is on the opposite side of the road to the Castle and the City Walls.

• This car park is located off Jewbury, close to the Layerthorpe access steps.
  
• Parking is not free for all users.
  
• Parking is free for Blue Badge holders.
  
• The car park type is multi storey.
  
• Parking spaces for Blue Badge holders do not need to be booked in advance.
  
• There are 4 Blue Badge parking bays within the car park.
  
• The dimensions of the Blue Badge parking bays is 220cm x 480cm (7ft 3in x 16ft 5in).
  
• The car park surface is tarmac.
  
• There is a 200cm (6ft 7in) height restriction for access to this car park.
  
• There is sloped access to the pavement in Jewbury from this car park.
  
• The pavement is on the opposite side of the road to the City Walls.

Viewing the City Walls (City Walls Trail) - Museum Gardens

• The Museum Gardens offer excellent views of the City Walls between Lendal Tower and Bootham Bar in very quiet surroundings.
• The St Mary's Abbey Walls and Yorkshire Museum are located within the gardens.

• The gardens can be accessed from Museum Street or Exhibition Square where York City Art Gallery is located.

• The gardens have a network of smooth surfaced paths with some easy to moderate slopes.
• The paths which offer closest views of the City Walls are mostly level.
• Bench seating is provided.

Viewing the City Walls (Ground Level Route) - Jewbury to Gillygate

• The walls can be viewed along Jewbury close to the Foss Bank Car Park.
• The pavement which runs parallel to the walls along Jewbury is level and there are no roads to cross until you reach the junction with Lord Major's Walk and Monkgate.
• The view of the walls then becomes obscured by buildings until you reach Monk Bar.
• Care should be taken when crossing Monk Bar as there is no pedestrian crossing and at the time of the survey there was scaffolding and street signs which obstructed the pavement on the far side.
• The safer way is to follow the trail on the map under Monk Bar and cross the road where there is a raised section approximately 15 metres inside the walls.
• The walls can be viewed again along a section of Lord Major's Walk up to the Corner Tower.
• Just past the Corner Tower you have to cross Moatside Court which is a quiet road.
• There are dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides of the road.
• From Moatside Court you can follow the Lord Major's Walk pavement until you reach Gillygate.
• If you turn left into Gillygate and follow the pavement you will eventually be able to see the wall again at Bootham Bar.

Viewing the City Walls (Ground Level Route) - Fishergate Postern to Red Tower

• From Fishergate Postern up to Red Tower there are very good views of the City Walls as the Inner City Ring Road (A1036) runs parallel along Fishergate, Paragon Street, Barbican Road and Foss Islands Road.
• The pavement which runs along Fishergate and then bends around to the left along Paragon Street and then Barbican Road is wide and mostly smooth and there are no kerbs.
• The path does have a gradual upward slope.
• There are some bench seats along the route.
• At Walmgate you have to bear left under the wall and cross the road before turning right under the wall again and resuming along Foss Islands Road.
• The road crossing point has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.

Viewing the City Walls (Ground Level Route) - Victoria Bar to Baile Hill

• Between Victoria Bar and Baile Hill it is possible to view the City Walls from internal streets, avoiding kerbs.
• This is via the pavements along Newton Terrace, Baile Terrace and Cromwell Road.
• These streets offer a quieter alternative for viewing compared to the Inner City Ring Road on the opposite side.
• The pavements are mostly flat but the paving can be slightly uneven in places.
• There are no road crossings required along this route.

Accessing the City Walls - Bootham Bar

• There is stepped access to the City Walls at the Bootham Bar access point.
• This access point is located in St Leonard's Place.
• There are 29 steps.
• The steps are not clearly marked.
• The height of the steps is approximately 15cm.
• The depth of the steps is approximately 28cm.
• There is a handrail on the right going up which is easy to grip but does not cover the first 2 steps.
• There is a landing.
• At the top of the steps there is a gate which has to be opened to enter the structure.
• The gate is heavy and opens away from you (push).
• The width of the gate opening is 94cm.
• Lighting levels within the structure are low.
• There is also a gate to exit the structure on the opposite side towards the City Wall.
• The gate is heavy opens towards you (pull) when exiting.
• The width of the gate opening is 104cm.
• There is a single, clearly marked step as you go through the second gateway.

Accessing the City Walls - Monk Bar

• There is stepped access to the City Walls at the Monk Bar.
  
• Stepped access is for either via the structure itself (towards Bootham Bar or into the Richard III Experience) or the alternative access point on the opposite side of Goodramgate (towards Layerthorpe).
  
• Access into the structure is via a single door which is permanently held open.
  
• There is a step in the doorway and 22 steps up.
  
• The height of the steps is 19cm.
  
• The depth of the steps is 23cm.
  
• The steps are not clearly marked.
  
• The steps have a handrail on the right going up.
  
• There is a low ceiling and also low lighting levels.
  
• Turn left at the top of the stairs for access onto the City Wall toward Bootham Bar.

• The Layerthorpe access point is located at the junction of Layerthorpe and Jewbury.
• There are 22 steps leading up onto the City Walls towards Monk Bar.
• The steps are not clearly marked.
• The height of the steps is approximately 19cm.
• The depth of the steps is approximately 30cm.
• There is a handrail of the left going up which is easy to grip but does not cover the first 2 or last 2 steps.
• The stair has 2 landings.
• It is only possible to head towards Monk Bar along the walls from the Layerthorpe access point as there is a gap in the opposite direction up to Red Tower.

• The Red Tower is located off Foss Islands Road.
• There are 10 steps.

• There is stepped access onto the City Walls at Walmgate Bar.
• There are 2 access points on either side of the structure; one stair leads onto the walls in a south westerly direction towards Fishergate Bar and one in a northerly direction towards Red Tower.
• The stair which leads towards Fishergate Bar also gives access to the steps leading up to the Gatehouse Coffee Shop.
• Towards Fishergate Bar the stair has 26 steps.
• The steps are not clearly marked.
• The height of the steps is approximately 16cm.
• The depth of the steps is approximately 30cm.
• There is a handrail but on the right going up which is easy to grip but it does not cover all the steps.
• After the first 13 steps there is a landing where you turn right to get onto the walls via the remaining 13 steps.
• If you continue straight ahead from the landing up 7 more steps you will reach the Gatehouse Coffee Shop which is located within the structure.
• There are no handrails for those steps and they are not clearly marked.
• There is a also a step in the Gatehouse Coffee Shop entrance doorway.
• Towards Red Tower the stair has 26 steps.
• The height of the steps is approximately 17cm.
• The depth of the steps is approximately 30cm.

• The Barker Tower access point has step free access from Lendal Bridge and stepped access up from Wellington Row, where the tower is located.

Walking on the City Walls - Bootham Bar to Monk Bar

• There are approximately 10 level changes between Bootham Bar and the Corner Tower along the City Wall.
• These level changes range between 1 and 13 steps going up and down.
• Only single steps are marked and on some the markings have faded.
• The height of the steps is generally 16cm-18cm.
• The depth of the steps is generally 24cm-30cm.
• Some sets of steps have a single handrail.
• There are narrow sections along this part of the route which can make passing difficult.
• There are bench seats along this route.
• Between the Corner Tower and Monk Bar there are approximately 6 more level changes along the City Wall.
• These level changes range between 3 and 6 steps and mostly have a single handrail on the right hand side.
• Some people may find the handrail difficult to grip.
• This section of the walls offers excellent views of York Minster.
• When you arrive at Monk Bar there is a single step, clearly marked to access the structure.
• The Richard III Experience is located within the structure.

• There are approximately 7 level changes between Monk Bar and the Corner Tower along the City Wall.
• These level changes range between 1 to 9 steps going up and down.

• The height of the steps is generally 16cm-19cm.
• The depth of the steps is generally 29cm-32cm.
• The internal guard fence can be used as a handrail for some steps but may not be easy to grip for all.
• There are narrow sections along this part of the route which can make passing more difficult.

• The wall between Fishergate Postern and Fishergate Bar is unguarded on the left hand side.
• There is an upward slope along the wall towards the minor corner tower.

• These steps do not have handrails.
• At Fishergate Bar you have to leave the wall via the stair and rejoin via the other stair on the opposite side.
• The section of the wall between Fishergate Bar and Walmgate is mostly level except for a small raised section where a bench seat is located.
• This section has 1 clearly marked step up, followed by 2 unmarked steps leading down.
• The steps do not have a handrail.
• This section of the walls is also unguarded on the left hand side.
• At Walmgate you have to leave the wall via the stair and rejoin via the one on the opposite side.
• The wall then runs up to Red Tower.
