Market Place

Market Place to Framwellgate Bridge (Silver Street)

- Exit the Market Square and head southwest and head down Silver Street.
- Silver Street has a steep slope heading downhill towards the River Wear.
- Silver Street is largely pedestrianised and only has the occasional vehicle heading along it.

Framwellgate Bridge (Silver Street) to North Road
- The length of the Framwellgate Bridge is approximately 50m after which continue along Silver Street for approximately 40m to reach North Road.
- The Framwellgate Bridge (Silver Street) is a stone bridge dating to the 15th century which largely pedestrianised.
- There is a block paved pavement on either side and an uneven cobbled centre.
- The is slight slope upwards to reach the centre of the bridge followed by a steep slope downwards.
- Upon reaching the far side of the bridge exit onto the pavement to your right.
- There may be signage and seating forming obstacles on the pavement.
North Road to the A690 Roundabout
- North Road access to the A690 roundabout is approximately 285m.
- The surface of the pavement along North Road is block paving.
- After entering North Road continue onwards for approximately 60m until you reach Milburngate, then turn right and continue for a few metres until you reach the zebra crossing.
- The zebra crossing has tactile drop kerbs on either side.
- After crossing North Road continue for approximately 215m until you reach the crossing over North Road next to the A690 roundabout.
- As you head along North Road there is slight uphill gradient.
- Advertisements may obstruct the pavement at certain points.
- There are service roads into Reform Place and the Water House Pub along the pavement.

A690 Roundabout to Atherton Street
- Cross North Road at the crossing point.
- There are tactile drop kerbs on either side, as well as a central island with tactile paving in the centre of the road.
- After crossing turn right and head across the road to Durham Bus Station.
- There are tactile drop kerbs on either side, as well as a central island with tactile paving in the centre of the road.
- After crossing turn right and head past Metcalfe House where the paving here is brick block paved and has a width of 110cm.
- After passing Metcalfe House turn left and head through the passageway.
- There are bollards with a width of 118cm to access the passageway.
- Continue through the passageway and exit it onto the pavement to your left onto Atherton Street.
Atherton Street to Sutton Street
- The route from Atherton Street to Sutton Street is approximately 120m.
- Continue ahead after the exiting the passageway to reach the Atherton Street crossing point.
- Cross Atherton Street at the crossing point and head towards the pavement along the A690. The crossing point has tactile drop kerbs on either side.
- Turn left and head along the pavement along the side of the A690, here the pavement is a mixture of block paving and tarmac.
- Along the pavement there is a steep uphill gradient.
- Head along the A690 pavement for approximately 75m, as you do so you will pass a crossing point with a tactile drop kerb to your right.
- Use the crossing point across the A690 to reach Sutton Street where there is a tactile drop kerb on the near side of the crossing, followed by a tactile island and then a block paved island with tactile drop kerbs and finally a tactile drop kerb on reaching Sutton Street.
- On reaching the block paved island you will need to take the crossing on your left.
Sutton Street to Unite Students - Rushford Court
- The distance between Sutton Street to Unite Students - Rushford Court is approximately 100m.
- Upon reaching Sutton Street turn right and head downhill along the pavement.
- The is a section of concrete pavement along the Sutton Street the majority of the paving is block paved.
- After approximately 75m you will reach Flass Street. Cross Flass Street there are no drop kerbs on either side.
- After crossing Flass Street ahead of you across Waddington Street is Unite Students - Rushford Court. There are no dropped kerbs on the near side of the crossing but there is a dropped kerb at the gates leading into Unite Students - Rushford Court.
Unite Students - Rushford Court
- There is a very large gate off Waddington Street into Unite Students - Rushford Court.
- This is followed by a very steep ramp.
