Overview

Getting Inside

  • There are multiple approaches to the entrance all of which involve slopes.
  • The approach from Freeman's Place is via a very slight slope. There are also bollards on approach with a width of 120cm between them.
    There is a steep slope on approach from the bridge across the River Wear. There is a bollard on approach on near side of the bridge.
    There is a ramp on approach from the pathway on the riverside on the east bank of the River Wear which has a slight slope which overcomes steps.
  • There are two entrances into the building. In addition to an entrance leading directly into the Riverfront Bistro.
    The main entrance has two sets of sliding automatic doors and level access.
  • The main entrance is signed as Durham University Business School.
    The rear entrance is not signed.
  • The main entrance provides step-free access to the level 00 Atrium and the main reception.
  • There is an entrance to the rear of the building which requires a key card to access which provides level access to the shower only.
    This rear entrance has step-free access to the rest of the building by the use of a platform lift that bypasses the steps.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building.
  • To access the Level 01 shower area and bike storage are towards the rear of the Waterside Building there is a platform lift which bypasses steps.
  • The floor surface along the majority of the circulation routes is hard and smooth and may have a shiny finish.
    Other circulation routes have patterned carpet.
  • There are resting areas in some of the circulation routes with a mixture of seating.
  • There is clear wayfinding and overhead signage as well as maps throughout the building.
  • There are manual doors along some of the circulation routes with the building.
  • There is a wheelchair charging area located next to the bicycle racks and shower on the ground floor.
    I.R. Portable Hearing Loop can be requested, and collected from the main building reception. These loops will only function within teaching and the Riverfront Bistro.

    • There are 7 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located throughout the building on all levels.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • The level 04 toilet with adaptations is located within WB-4001 Executive Hub Lounge.
    • Ambulant toilet facilities are located within the male and female standard toilet facilities.
    • The gender inclusive step-free toilet facilities are located on level 04 within WB-4001 Executive Hub Lounge.
    • The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on all levels.

    • The Changing Places toilet facilities are located on level 00 near the main entrance.
    • Standard changing facilities are located near the rear entrance on level 00.
    • Parent and baby changing facilities are located in the standard male and female toilet facilities near the main entrance on level 00 and in the Nursing Room on level 00.

    • On-street designated Blue Badge parking is available .

Entrance (Main Entrance)

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located towards the right of the building.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 50m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has automatic doors and step-free level access.
  • Levels 00, 01, 02, 03 and 04 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 800kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • The majority of the external controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 90cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 135cm (width) x 150cm (depth).

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located in front of you on entry via the main entrance.
  • Level 00, 01, 02, 03 and 04 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
