Access to the basement is via stairs, however the basement can be accessed externally from the Servants Tunnel via a stair lift and steep ramp.
There are 11 steps within the basement to access the kitchen and exit.
The basement can be seen by entering via the two basement external entrance/exits if needed. - There is a member of staff available for help and assistance.
- Staff/volunteers can describe the layout and access around the site.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair and cycles. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: binoculars, magnifying glass and activity sheets.

- You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: a mobility scooter. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

Route to (the House)
- Exit the visitor reception and turn right.
Pass the entrance to the stable yard and turn left, away from the car park.
Turn left at the T junction, up a steep slope and follow the path round to the house.
The accessible entrance is on the left of the front of the house and the main entrance is in the centre. - The route to the area is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
- Path surfaces along the route are compact earth, tarmac and gravel.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.
- The visitor shuttle can take you to the accessible entrance for ground floor house access and also to the servants tunnel for basement access.
Ramp or Slope (Property Office Accessible Entrance)
- The ramp is slight and over 150cm wide.
- The ramp does not have handrails.
Entrance (Property Office - Accessible)
- The entrance surveyed is located to the right of the main entrance.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The steep ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- This entrance has a bell.
- Features not positioned at a suitable height for a wheelchair user include: the bell.
- There are double manual doors which open away from you.
- The width of the opening is 110cm.
Entrance (Main)
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the house.
- There is stepped access at the entrance.
- There are 4 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
- Steps are split with a resting area.
- Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
- There are double manual doors which open away from you.
- The width of the opening is 152cm.
Lift (Stair Lift to Basement)
- This lift is a stair lift (staff assistance required).
- A member of staff needs to be notified for use of the lift.
- The floors which are accessible by this lift are Basement.
- The lift overcomes a small level change.
- The lift does have a recommended turning space (150cm x 150cm) in front of it.
- The lift door opening width is 77cm.
- The dimensions of the lift are 77cm x 105cm.
Steps (Basement)
- There are 7 steps.
- The steps are not clearly marked and there are no handrails.
Entrance (Basement)
- The entrance surveyed is located at the end of the Servants Tunnel, to the left.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The steep ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with a handrail on the left going up.
- The ramp overcomes the steps.
- There are 2 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
- All of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
- There are double manual doors which open away from you.
- The width of the opening is 126cm.
- The handrail for the ramp does not cover the full length of the ramp.
Tour
- The tour is guided.
- The tour takes approximately 70 minutes.
- There is stepped access along the tour route.
- The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
- The tour can be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
- Areas with stepped access only can be experienced by visitors via a video on tablet or mobile phone and a photo album.
- There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.
- Tour information includes the following formats: information board.
- The tour does not have a hearing assistance system.
- There are sofas, bench seats and chairs without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.

Exit
- The exit is located at the end of the basement corridor.
- There is step-free level access at the exit.
- There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 120cm.
Standard Toilet (Living Room)
- There is step-free level access into the toilet.
- The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the door opening is 92cm.
- Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
