Public Transport

Parking

  • This site has a car park.
  • This is an open air car park with a grass surface.
  • Parking is free for all users.
  • Maps and information boards are not available.
  • There are no Blue Badge parking bays available.
  • Obstacles from the car park include: level changes with no dropped kerbs and a lack of pedestrian walkways to cross the car park.
  • There are not parent and child parking bays available.
  • A roadside drop-off point is available at the main road entrance to Compton Castle for visitors with additional access requirements.
    After dropping off passengers, drivers can use the turning circle at the drop-off point before returning to the main visitor car park.
    Please note that there is no designated accessible parking on site.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • You can borrow these from the visitor reception area in the castle. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • Umbrellas are available to borrow from visitor reception.

Route to (the Herb Garden)

  • Go past the visitor reception and through the castle exit. The herb garden will be in front of you.
  • The route to the area includes up to 3 steps without a handrail.
  • Path surfaces along the route are paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.

Outdoor Spaces (Herb Garden)

  • This information is for the access point located through the castle exit.
  • Access into the area is via a step.
  • There is 1 step, which is unmarked, with no handrails.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: grass and block paving.
  • Footpaths are available in some of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.

Standard Toilet (Male - Herb Garden)

  • Access into the toilet is via a step.
  • There is 1 step, which is unmarked, with no handrails.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a medium colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 87cm.
  • Internally the door has a medium colour contrast.
  • The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 70cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is twist/turn.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There are no hand dryers.

Route to (the Rose Garden)

  • Leave the castle by the main entrance, through two set of permanently held open doors.
    Turn right after the second door to go through a narrow open archway with a width 76cm.
    Go up a flight of 13 steps.
    The rose garden will be in front of you.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope and includes more than 3 steps without a handrail.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel and paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.

Outdoor Spaces (Rose Garden)

  • This information is for the access point located through the open archway to left of the castle as you approach from the car park.
  • Access into the area is via steps and a slight ramp/slope.
  • The slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide.
  • There are 10+ steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • This is an open gap at the surveyed access point.
  • The width of the gap is 77cm.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: formal gardens.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: grass and gravel.
  • Footpaths are available in some of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas.
  • There are slight slopes and steps in various areas.
  • There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.

Route to (the Picnic Area)

  • Leave the castle by the main entrance, through two sets of permanently held open doors.
    The picnic area is then on the right across the grass.
  • The route to the area includes up to 3 steps without a handrail.
  • Path surfaces along the route are compact earth, gravel, muddy, grass and paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.

Picnic Area

  • The following information describes the picnic area located before the castle as you approach from the car park, on the left hand side.
  • Access into the area is via a step.
  • There is 1 step, which is unmarked, with no handrails.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are not available.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the lowest picnic table is 68cm.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the highest picnic table is 72cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs and all of the tables.
  • There is no step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to grass.
