Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, magnifying glass, torch and accessible maps.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (the Walled Gardens)

  • Proceed past visitor reception and along the main pathway.
    Turn right through the open gate onto the gravel path that will take you to the house.
    As the house comes into view, turn right and the access point to the walled gardens is immediately ahead.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.
  • A folded wheelchair can be carried on the shuttle if the visitor can transfer from the wheelchair to a seat.

Outdoor Spaces

  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • The access points to the area are located opposite the house and on the east side of the walled gardens near the maze.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: cobbled, block paving and gravel.
  • Footpaths are available in all of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas .
  • The slight slopes are at various points around the pathways of the walled gardens.
  • There are bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • The paths have gates which may create obstacles for some users.
  • Gates leading to different sections are permanently open and at least 70cm wide.

Entrance (East Side of the Gardens)

  • The entrance surveyed is located on the east side of the walled gardens.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a single manual gate which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 76cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.
