Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, sunglasses and soft toy.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (the House)

  • After exiting visitor reception, follow the path then take the second turning on the right
    Follow the path downhill as it curves to the left.
    At the bottom the house will be facing you. The entrance is the first door on the right.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is an accessible shuttle which can take visitors to this area.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the house.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The steep ramp is under 75cm wide, with no handrails.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • There are 3 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 131cm.
  • There is a second set of manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 127cm.
  • Entry to the house for users of larger wheelchairs or scooters can be obtained via the exit door.

Tour

  • The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
  • The tour takes approximately 1 hour.
  • There is stepped access along the tour route.
  • The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
  • The tour can be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
  • Areas with stepped access only can be experienced by visitors via a video on tablet or mobile phone.
  • The tour route may vary depending on the season.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.
  • The following may be experienced on the tour: lighting effects.
  • Tour information includes the following formats: information board and television/screen.
  • The tour does not have a hearing assistance system.
  • There are bench seats and a mixture of chairs with and without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
  • Some flooring along the tour route is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • Lighting levels are varied throughout the tour route.
  • One of the rooms has a steep ramp to enter and another steep ramp to exit.
    There is a music and light installation in the Music Room.

Stairs (Up)

  • The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1.
  • There are more than 20 steps between floors.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the left going up.
  • The highest step is 17cm high.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Steps (to Alcove Bedroom Landing)

  • There are 4 steps.
  • The steps are not clearly marked but there is a handrail on the left going up.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Stairs (Down)

  • The floors which are accessible by stairs are 1, G.
  • There are more than 20 steps between floors.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the right going down.
  • The highest step is 18cm high.
  • This is a spiral staircase and will be narrower in some areas.
  • Lighting levels are low.
  • The bottom 2 steps are clearly marked.
    There is a rope going down the left going down to aid support.
    The 'Up' flight of stairs can also be used to descend from the first floor.

Standard Toilet (House - Female)

  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 76cm.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 71cm.

Exit

  • The exit is located next to the standard toilets on the ground floor.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the exit.
  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 87cm.
  • There is a steep ramp between 75cm and 150cm wide beyond the exit, with no handrails.

Toilet with Adaptations (House - Portaloo - Ambulant - Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located outside the house, opposite the exit.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 81cm.
  • The door has a lever twist lock.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 139cm x 133cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat.
  • The lateral transfer space is 81cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a lever flush on the non transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side.
  • There is no dropdown rail.
  • The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder.
  • The height of the toilet seat above floor level is 52cm.
