Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • The G.E. Fogg Building has four entrances. The main entrance provides step-free level access to the ground floor (via an external enclosed platform lift which bypasses the steep slope). There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The Bancroft Road entrance provides stepped access to the ground floor, via 6 steps. There are double manual doors (with one leaf locked) at this entrance.
  • The side entrance provides stepped access directly into the south stairwell, between the ground floor and first floor, via a single step. There is a single manual door at this entrance.
  • The Peter Landin Teaching Rooms entrance provides step-free access (via a steep slope) to the third floor, from the third floor of the Peter Landin Teaching Rooms. There are double manual doors at this entrance.
  • The main entrance and Bancroft Road entrances are signed as "G.E. Fogg Building - School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences".
  • The side entrance and Peter Mandelson Teaching Rooms entrances are unsigned.
  • The main entrance provides step-free level access to the ground floor (via an external enclosed platform lift which bypasses the steep slope).
  • The Bancroft Road entrance is located to the rear of the building, on Bancroft Road, and provides stepped access to the ground floor, via 6 steps.
  • The side entrance is located to the side of the building, opposite the Graduate Centre, and provides stepped access directly into the south stairwell, between the ground floor and first floor, via a single step.
  • The Peter Landin Teaching Rooms entrance is located on the third floor of the Peter Landin Teaching Rooms, inside the Department of Computer Science Informatics Hub, and provides step-free access (via a steep slope) to the third floor.
  • There is no internal circulation on the first floor, meaning that rooms 1.02 (SBBS Meeting Room) and 1.02A (Psychology Room) can only be accessed via the north stairwell - they cannot be reached via lift.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free access throughout the majority of the building.
  • On the ground floor, there is step-free level access from the main entrance to the foyer, accessible and standard toilets, the G.E. Fogg Lecture Theatre and the North Stairs.
  • There are 3 steps, bypassed by a steep ramp (with no handrails) to access the lifts, south stairwell, and Room G.13 (ULT Freezer Room).
  • There is no internal circulation on the first floor, meaning that rooms 1.02 (SBBS Meeting Room) and 1.02A (Psychology Room) can only be accessed via the north stairwell - they cannot be reached via lift. Otherwise, there is step-free level access to all other rooms and facilities on this floor, from the lifts.
  • There is step-free level access on all other floors (from the second floor upwards).
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with most having a shiny vinyl finish, and some featuring low-pile carpet.
  • There are resting areas in circulation and lobby areas throughout the building, with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall-mounted floor plan signage is provided in the lift lobby area on each floor. There is also some wayfinding signage, and each room is clearly signed on its door.
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There is 1 toilet with adaptations.
    • The toilet with adaptations is located on the ground floor, immediately to the right as you enter the building through the main entrance.
    • The toilet with adaptations has a left hand transfer space.
    • The male and female step-free standard toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, immediately to the right as you enter the building through the main entrance.
    • The female step-free standard toilet facilities are located on the first floor, third floor and fifth floor, ahead and on the right as you exit the lift lobby.
    • The male step-free standard toilet facilities are located on the second floor and fourth floor, ahead and on the right as you exit the lift lobby.
    • The shared step-free standard toilet facilities are located on the sixth floor, ahead and on the right as you exit the lift lobby.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • Standard shower facilities are located within the standard male and female toilets on the ground floor, and within the standard shared toilets on the sixth floor.

Parking (Queens' Building)

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located between the G.O. Jones Building and the Queens' Building.
    • The car park is open air/surface.
    • The car park surface consists of tarmac.
    • There is 1 designated Blue Badge parking bay available.
    • The Blue Badge bay is clearly marked.
    • The surveyed Blue Badge parking bay dimensions are 240cm (width) x 480cm (depth).
    • There is a marked zone to both sides but not at the rear.
    • The width of the marked zone is 120cm.
    • The nearest designated bay is 168m from the main entrance.
    • The most accessible route from the Blue Badge parking has a very easy ramp or slope and bollards.
    • The Blue Badge bay is flush with the route to the building entrance.
  • Charges and Restrictions View
    • This car park is for Blue Badge holders and permit holders only.
    • Parking is free for all users.
    • Clearly presented parking signs are available.
    • Parking on campus is extremely limited and restricted to disabled staff, students, visitors, and contractors for whom parking on site is essential. Please contact the university if you wish to park on site.
  • Drop-off Point View
    • There is not a designated drop-off point available.
  • On-street Parking View
    • On-street standard parking is available.
    • Standard on-street parking is available in marked bays on Bancroft Road.

Entrance (Main Entrance)

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building, on Graduate Square.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access via lift at the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 102cm.
  • The key fob/card reader is for out of hours access only.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open by sliding.
  • The width of the opening is 165cm.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.
  • The enclosed external platform lift bypasses the steep slope in front of the entrance.

Lift (Platform Lift - Main Entrance)

  • The lift surveyed is located to the left as you approach the main entrance to the building on Graduate Square.
  • This lift is a platform lift.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 4m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • The lift door has a low visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 400kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 100cm.

  • The distance from the main entrance is 30m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has a steep ramp or slope and narrow walkways.
  • Floors G, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 1000kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.

  • Floors G, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 18 steps between floors.
  • The steps have low visual contrast markings and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 16cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.

Stairs (South Stairs)

  • The stairs surveyed are located ahead as you enter the building via the main entrance, then to the left and ahead at the bottom of the ramp.
  • There are double manual doors to access the stairwell.
  • Floors G, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade and unshaded light sources.

Reception (School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences - SBBS)

  • The reception is located on the first floor, straight ahead as you exit the lift.
  • The distance from the lift is 10m.
  • The most accessible route to reception has automatic doors.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 111cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 76cm.
  • The reception has windows, glazed screens and patterned/distracting backgrounds.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
  • There is not room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • Seating available in this area includes: sofas.

Toilet with Adaptations (Ground Floor - Left Hand Transfer)
