Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • The Graduate Centre has two entrances. Both entrances provide step-free level access to Level 0. The main entrance has a key-card activated single automatic door (with alternative manual revolving doors), and the courtyard entrance has a key-card activated double automatic door.
  • The main entrance is signed as "Queen Mary University of London Graduate Centre - Home of School of Economics and Finance", while the courtyard entrance is unsigned.
  • The main entrance provides step-free level access to the reception foyer on Level 0.
  • The courtyard entrance is located in the courtyard between the Engineering Building and the Graduate Centre, and also provides step-free level access to the reception foyer on Level 0.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors, and to all floors, via lift.
  • Floor surfaces along circulation routes are hard and smooth, with a mixture of shiny vinyl flooring and low-pile carpet.
  • There are resting areas in circulation and lobby areas throughout the building, with a mixture of seating.
  • Overhead and wall-mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building. This includes tactile and Braille signage.
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 15+ toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on all levels, at both the eastern and western ends of the building.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • Ambulant toilet facilities are located within all standard male and female toilets.
    • The female step-free standard toilet facilities are located on Levels 1, 3 and 5, at the western end of the building, straight ahead as you exit the lift.
    • The male step-free standard toilet facilities are located on Levels 2, 4 and 6, at the western end of the building, straight ahead as you exit the lift.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • The washroom facilities which have adaptations are located on Level 4, at the western end of the building, ahead, along the corridor and then on the left as you exit the lift.
    • Standard shower facilities are located within the standard female toilets on Levels 1, 3 and 5; and within the standard male toilets on Levels 2 and 4.

Parking (Queens' Building)

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located between the G.O. Jones Building and the Queens' Building.
    • The car park is open air/surface.
    • The car park surface consists of tarmac.
    • There is 1 designated Blue Badge parking bay available.
    • The Blue Badge bay is clearly marked.
    • The surveyed Blue Badge parking bay dimensions are 240cm (width) x 480cm (depth).
    • There is a marked zone to both sides but not at the rear.
    • The width of the marked zone is 120cm.
    • The nearest designated bay is 185m from the main entrance.
    • The most accessible route from the Blue Badge parking has a very easy ramp or slope and bollards.
    • The Blue Badge bay is flush with the route to the building entrance.
  • Charges and Restrictions View
    • This car park is for Blue Badge holders and permit holders only.
    • Parking is free for all users.
    • Clearly presented parking signs are available.
    • Parking on campus is extremely limited and restricted to disabled staff, students, visitors, and contractors for whom parking on site is essential. Please contact the university if you wish to park on site.
  • Drop-off Point View
    • There is not a designated drop-off point available.
  • On-street Parking View
    • On-street standard parking is available.
    • Standard on-street parking is available in marked bays on Bancroft Road.

Main Entrance

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building, on Graduate Square.
  • The entrance area is not clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 105cm.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 109cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The door has a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 110cm.
  • There is an alternative single automatic door which can be used to access the building at this entrance, with similar specifications.
    There are also two alternative sets of manual revolving doors which can be used to access the building at this entrance, both of which have an opening width of 145cm.

Reception (Main Reception)

  • The reception is located on Level 0, straight ahead as you enter the building via the main entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 5m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 75cm.
  • There is not a lowered section at the desk.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There may be background noise in this area.
  • The flooring is shiny.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the use of large glazed walls.
  • There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • Seating available in this area includes: chairs without armrests and high stools.

Reception (School of Economics and Finance)

  • The reception is located on Level 3 of the Graduate Centre, ahead and on the right as you exit the lift.
  • The distance from the lift is 6m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 110cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 76cm.
  • The reception has windows and glazed screens.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • The flooring is shiny.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
  • There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • Seating available in this area includes: sofas.
  • Furniture available in this area includes: coffee tables.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located to the left as you enter the building via the main entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 11m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • Levels 0, 1, 1A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).

  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.

    • The door opens inwards and has a low visual contrast.
