Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • Queens' Building has four entrances.
    The main entrance provides step-free access via a slight ramp to the ground floor.
    There are push pad activated, double automatic doors available at the main entrance.
  • The entrances are signed as 'Queens' Building', 'Queens' Building - Octagon', and 'Queens' Building - Careers Centre'.
  • The east side entrance provides stepped access to the rear of the ground floor.
    The Queens' Building - Octagon entrance provides step-free access via a platform lift to the rear of the ground floor.
    The Queens' Building - Careers Centre entrance provides stepped access to the rear of the ground floor.

Getting Around (Basement)

  • There is step-free level access in some areas of the basement floor.
  • There is a slight slope leading down from the main lift into the basement corridor. There is a handrail on the right going down.
  • There are several small steps up into some areas, including the male and female toilets and showers on the west side of the basement, the front link corridor to the east side of the basement and up into several offices along the basement corridors.
  • There are three slight slopes along the east basement corridor. Two of these are along the corridor itself, whilst the third provides access to the maintenance office.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes and hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • There are no resting/seating areas in circulation areas.
  • Overhead and wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the basement floor.
  • There are manual doors in some corridors.

Getting Around (Floor 1)

  • There is step-free level access throughout the majority of floor 1.
  • There is a steep slope in the corridor that bypasses three clearly marked, 15cm steps with a handrail on the left going up by rooms CB100-CB111.
  • There is a slope that varies between slight and steep gradients that leads to the Senior Common Room Bar.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are carpeted and smooth.
  • There are no resting areas in circulation areas.
  • Overhead and wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout floor 1.
  • There are manual doors in both corridor and lobby areas.

Getting Around (Ground Floor, Floors 2 - 4)

  • There is step-free level access throughout the majority of the building on all floors.
  • On the ground floor, there is a steep ramp up to security and the main lift. This ramp bypasses six unmarked steps with handrails on both sides, which are at a height of 14cm.
    In order to access the main lift, and therefore to gain step-free level access to the majority of the building, this steep ramp must be used.
  • On floor 2, there is a slight slope leading up to the Student & Staff Common Room. This slope bypasses two clearly marked steps with handrails on both sides, which are at a height of 14cm.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, or carpeted and smooth.
  • There are resting areas in some circulation and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Overhead and wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 3 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on the ground floor, floor 2 and floor 2S.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on the ground floor and floor 2S.
    • The male and female toilet facilities are located in the basement.
  • Changing Places and Changing Facilities View
    • Standard changing facilities are located in the male and female showers in the basement.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • Standard shower facilities are located in the basement.

Parking

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located to the right of the Queens' Building.
    • There are 2 designated Blue Badge parking bays available.
    • The Blue Badge bays are clearly marked.
    • The surveyed Blue Badge parking bay dimensions are 230cm (width) x 440cm (depth).
    • There is a marked zone to both sides but not at the rear.
    • The width of the marked zone is 120cm.
    • The nearest designated bay is 20m from the Queens' Building main entrance.

Entrance (Main Entrance)

  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a slight gradient.
  • The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide with no handrails.
  • The ramp bypasses the steps.
  • There are 3 steps with no handrails.
  • The steps are unmarked.
  • The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 14cm.
  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
  • There is an intercom at a height of 90cm.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • There is a push pad at a height of 100cm.
  • The width of the opening is 120cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 100cm.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located to the left as you enter, and then to the right after exiting the portable ramp.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 22m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has a steep ramp or slope.
  • The basement, ground, floor 1, floor 2 and floor 3 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift does not have a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 1000kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 80cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 105cm (width) x 210cm (depth).

Stairs (Main Staircase)

  • The stairs surveyed are located to the left as you enter, and then to the right after exiting the portable ramp.
  • The basement, ground, floor 1, floor 2 and floor 3 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps have some clear markings and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 18cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.

Stairs (Rooms E301 - E304a)

  • The stairs surveyed are located on floor 3, from the School of Mathematical Sciences Office.
  • There is a single manual door to access the stairwell.
  • The floor 3 and Rooms E301 - E304a can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 11 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 16cm.

Stairs (Floor 4 Offices)

  • The stairs surveyed are located directly ahead after the E301 - E304a stairs on floor 3.
  • The rooms E301 - E304a on floor 3 and floor 4 can be accessed by these stairs.

  • The steps are unmarked and have a handrail on the left going up.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
