Introduction

  • The route from One Elmwood Student Centre to the McClay Library is approximately 330m long, and may take around 4-5 minutes to complete.
  • There is a pedestrian crossing on University Street in front of One Elmwood Student Centre, before entering the traffic controlled area of the campus.
  • There are long slopes with a slight gradient leading down towards the library for approximately 100m, with some level areas and seating available.

University Road Pedestrian Crossing

  • From the area in front of the One Elmwood Student Centre main entrance, follow the tall columns on either side leading towards University Street and slightly to the right towards the pedestrian crossing.
  • There is a slight slope down the pavement at the crossing.
  • There is tactile paving here, although it does not have a colour contrast to the main paving blocks.
  • The traffic light controls are 104cm high, and there are rotating cones beneath.
  • There are audio and visual signals, and metallic road studs mark the route across.
  • At the opposite side there is tactile paving, and a surface of paving blocks on a wide pavement area.
  • There is a strip of tactile paving on the left which leads towards the campus pedestrian entry gate.

University Road Pedestrian Entry Gate to Lanyon Building Front

  • The pedestrian entry gate to the left beyond the University pedestrian crossing is 130cm wide and permanently held open.
  • There is a slight slope down beyond the entry gate which has a block paving surface.
  • A map and directional signage is available to the right beyond the entry.
  • Continue ahead towards the Lanyon Building for approximately 30m, with a chain link fence and grass lawn on the right, and a paved pedestrian area around the war memorial to the left.
  • The final bollard of the fence is marked with a visual band before an access road crossing.
  • The surface changes to block paving at the road to cross, with tarmac on the right.
  • On the opposite side of the access road there is tactical paving and a hedge to turn right before, to begin following along the front of the Lanyon Building.

Lanyon Building Front to Car Park

  • There is dropped paving to begin the pavement in front of the Lanyon Building which has a surface of paving slabs.
  • Continue for approximately 40m until the corner of the building, with a lawn and hedge on your left and the access road to your right.
  • Following the pavement round to the left, at the corner you may notice the cars in the car park encroaching the pavement space.
  • The pavement is 138cm wide including level kerbs on each side, but may be limited to 75-85cm if any parked cars are over-hanging the pavement.
  • If pavement space is too limited, use the dropped kerb on the right of the corner to continue along the same route.
  • This road and car park is regularly used by pedestrians.

Lanyon Building Car Park to Botanic Avenue

  • Continue along the pavement with the Lanyon Building's hedge to your left and the car park on your right for approximately 70m.
  • The pavement widens at a stepped entrance on the left before narrowing again where there is a dropped kerb near the lift entry.
  • There is a further wider area to another stepped entrance before a downwards slope with a slight gradient begins.
  • The end of the slope is at the end of the car park where there is now a much wider pedestrian space.
  • Follow the route slightly to the right towards the bollards, over a block paving surface.
  • There are four 95cm high bollards which have a visual contrast marking at the top.
  • The space between the bollards is 119cm.
  • Beyond the bollards has a surface of paving slabs with a slight incline downwards for approximately 30m until the next set of bollards.
  • There are metallic tactile paving marker bars in groups of three on either side of this slope extending out to around 1m from the edges.
  • The markers stop where there are wooden seating benches on the left throughout the slope.
  • There are three 95cm high bollards which have a visual contrast marking near the bottom of the slope.
  • The space between the lower bollards is 130cm.
  • Follow the path slightly left towards the end of the Lanyon Building, where there are three lampposts to be aware of near the end of the slope.
  • There is now a wider area with a block paving surface which offers seating benches and picnic tables on the left near the Teaching Centre.
  • There is also a smoking shelter bench on the right.
  • Continue between the Teaching Centre building on the left and tall wooden fences of the Botanic Gardens on your right for approximately 30m to Botanic Avenue.

Botanic Avenue Crossing to McClay Library

  • The Botanic Avenue access road crossing is marked by level kerbing blocks running through the block paving, and a black bollard to the right.
  • There is a one lane vehicle access gate alongside a pedestrian gate to access the Botanic Gardens on the right here.
  • Any traffic can be viewed through the fence to the right, or coming along the road beyond the controlled access barrier along to the left.
