Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free via slight slopes.
  • The Canopy Kitchen and Courtyard has one external entrance which provides step-free level access with automatic doors.
    It can also be accessed internally via level 1 of the Edinburgh Futures Institute which has its own entrance.
  • The external entrance is signed with the café name.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the Canopy Kitchen and Courtyard.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • There are resting areas in the circulation areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Wayfinding signage is limited within the building.
  • Please note the fire evacuation strategy for this building relies on the ability to self-transfer in to an evacuation chair.

Entrance

  • This entrance is located on the east side of the Edinburgh Futures Institute, on Middle Meadow Walk.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 213cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.

Eating and Drinking (Canopy Grab and Go)

  • Location and Service View
    • The Canopy Grab and Go counter is on the left as you enter the café.
    • This area has a counter where food and drink can be ordered and staff who can provide assistance with ordering.
    • Full table service is not available.
    • The following dietary requirements can be catered for: gluten free, dairy free, lactose free, nut allergy, vegetarian and vegan.
    • The following are available: drinking straws and takeaway cups.
    • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • Order and Payment View
    • The service counter was surveyed.
    • There is step-free level access to the counter.
    • The height of the counter is 112cm.
    • There is a lowered section at the counter.
    • The height of the lowered section is 76cm.
    • The counter has patterned/distracting backgrounds which may affect the ability of someone to lip read.
  • Seating Area View
    • There is step-free level access throughout the seating area.
    • There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
    • There is space for an assistance dog to rest.
    • The flooring is shiny.
    • The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
    • Seating available in this area includes: chairs without armrests, armchairs, sofas, benches and high stools.
    • Furniture available in this area includes: tables, coffee tables, high tables and long tables.
