Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step free via slight and steep ramps and slopes through the Pollock Halls site.
  • The Holland Microlab building has one entrance, located at the front of the building, leading in from the courtyard.
    The entrance provides step-free access to the ground floor via a steep ramp. There is a single manual door at this entrance.
  • The entrance is signed as "Holland Microlab" on the approach, and then "Holland House: Micro-Lab" above the door.
  • The Holland Microlab building entrance provides step-free access to the ground floor via a steep ramp.
    There is a single manual door at this entrance.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the ground floor and first floor of the building; however access to the first floor, which contains one quiet study room only, is via stairs only.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are shiny, with a smooth vinyl finish.
  • There is a resting area in the entrance foyer, to the right as you enter the building through the Holland Microlab Building entrance, in addition to seating within the Microlab and quiet study rooms.
  • Some wall-mounted wayfinding signage is provided within the building; however this is of a temporary nature.
  • There are not manual doors along any circulation corridors within this building.
  • This building is connected to the South Hall Complex, and its toilet facilities are used when events take place in South Hall.

    • Please note the fire evacuation strategy from the upper floors of this building relies on the ability to self-transfer in to an evacuation chair.

    • There is 1 toilet with adaptations.
    • The toilet with adaptations is located to the left and then to the right as you enter the building through the building entrance.

    • Parent and baby changing facilities are located within the toilet with adaptations.

Parking

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located in the centre of the Pollock Halls site, between Ewing House, Baird House and the South Hall Complex.
    • The car park is open air/surface.
    • The car park surface consists of tarmac and block paving.
    • There are no designated Blue Badge parking bays available.
  • Charges and Restrictions View
    • This car park is for visitors, Blue Badge holders and permit holders only.
    • Parking is free for all users.
    • Clearly presented parking signs are not available.
    • View information on parking policies/charges (opens new tab).
    • Parking is for staff and student permit holders, Blue Badge holders, and visitors only. During arrival periods, visitor parking is for quick drop-off only.
      Resident students are not generally permitted to park here. Resident parking permits are only issued to disabled students with Blue Badges, or in exceptional circumstances. If intending to park here while resident in the halls, student Blue Badge holders must apply for a permit via following the links onhttps://transport.ed.ac.uk/travelling-here/pollock.
  • Drop-off Point View
    • There is not a designated drop-off point available.
  • Public Car Parks View
    • The nearest Blue Badge parking and EV charging points are located by John Burnett House and outside the Scott Hotel, approximately 200m and 315m from the building entrance respectively. Please see the access guides for these buildings for further information.

Entrance (Holland Microlab Building)

  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.

  • The ramp is over 150cm wide with a central handrail.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 124cm.
  • There is a single manual door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 89cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The door has a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 113cm.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Room (Holland Microlab)

  • The room is located to the left and left again as you enter the building through the building entrance.
  • The distance from the building entrance is 20m.
  • The most accessible route to the room has step-free level access.
  • There is no signage on or near the door.
  • There is step-free level access into the room.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 105cm.
  • There is a single manual door with a high visual contrast.
  • The door opens outwards.
  • The width of the opening is 84cm.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 115cm.
  • There is step-free level access throughout the room.
  • There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest.
  • The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
  • Seating available in the room includes: chairs without armrests and riser recliner chairs.
