Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the accessible entrance is step-free from the Fleeming Jenkin Building.
  • There are steep slopes on the path approaching the accessible entrance from Thomas Bayes Road and the Colin Maclaurin Road car park.
    There is stepped access from the Colin Maclaurin car park to the main entrance and Lower Lab - Workshop 4 entrance.
  • There Engineering Structures Laboratory has three entrances. The most accessible entrance is to the left end of the building, providing level access to the ground floor.
    All three entrances have manual doors. The Accessible Entrance and Main Entrance doors have door-closers.
  • The Accessible Entrance and Main Entrance are both signed as School of Engineering Structures Laboratory, but are named Accessible Entrance and Main Entrance. The Lower Lab - Workshop 4 entrance is signed as Workshop 4.
  • The Accessible Entrance provides step-free level access to the ground floor only. Assistance is required for entry as the door can only be opened from the inside.
  • The Main Entrance has stepped access via 8 unmarked open tread steps.
    The Lower Lab - Workshop 4 entrance has a step over a metal threshold.
  • There is no internal step-free access between floor levels internally. The ground floor and lower lab levels are accessed separately by the different entrances.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the ground floor, but stepped access between other floors only.
  • Access to the first and second balcony floors at the rear is via a spiral staircase.
    Access to first floor balcony at the front is via a ladder staircase.
  • There are stairs linking the ground and lower ground floors.
    Alternatively there is external steep sloped access between the floors via the service road, or slight ramped access via the Fleeming Jenkin and Faraday Buildings.
  • Floor surfaces throughout are hard and smooth with some having a shiny finish.
    Colour changes to different areas may appear like steps to those with a visual impairment.
    Care should be taken of items left on floors as this is a workshop environment.
  • There are resting areas throughout with a mixture of seating.
  • There is limited wall mounted signage showing restricted access.
  • There are no manual doors in any circulation areas except to storage areas or the technicians office.

Entrance (Accessible Entrance)

  • This entrance is located on the left end of the building.
  • The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double manual doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 80cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 100cm.
  • Exit is by push bar. Doors require unlocking from inside.

Entrance (Main Entrance)

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building.
  • The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • There are 8 steps with a handrail on the left going up.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The steps are unmarked.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 18cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • The steps are metal with open treads.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 84cm.
  • There is also a keypad alternative.
  • There are double manual doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The doors open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 79cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 103cm.

Entrance (Lower Lab - Workshop 4)

  • This entrance is located on the front of the building to the right of the main entrance.
  • The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • There is 1 step with no handrails.
  • The step is unmarked.
  • The height of the step is not between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 11cm.
  • The step is a metal threshold 11cm high.
  • There is a single manual door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 106cm.
  • The door has a low visual contrast.

Stairs (Front Stairs)

  • The stairs surveyed are located at the front of the building.
  • The lower ground and ground floors can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 7 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail on the right going up.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.

  • The handrail is easy to grip.

  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 20cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • The steps have open risers.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the size of the space.

Stairs (Front Balcony)

  • The stairs surveyed are located on the front left of the building.
  • The ground floor and first floor balcony can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 13 steps between floors.
  • The steps are unmarked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 25cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • The steps have open risers.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
  • Access to the balcony is restricted to authorised personnel only.
