About
View
- Engineering Building B is a medium sized rectangular building with four floors.
- The building has two clearly signed areas (Cores 5 and 6) where identical lifts and self contained stairwells are located.
- The floors are signed as Basement, Ground, 1 and 2.
This is slightly different inside lifts where control buttons are marked as 0 instead of Ground and -1 instead of Basement.
In Core 5 the first floor is signed as First Floor/Mezzanine. - There is internal step-free access between Engineering Building B and the larger Nancy Rothwell Building via a sloped link bridge on the second floor.
There is also step-free level access between Engineering Building B and the Nancy Rothwell Building on the basement floor. - View information on Engineering Building B.

- Engineering Building B is joined to the Nancy Rothwell Building on the basement and second floors and is most commonly accessed via Engineering Building A.

Getting Inside
- The approach to the building is step-free and level.
- Engineering Building B is usually accessed via the larger adjoining Nancy Rothwell Building using the link bridge on the second floor.
The link bridge has a slight gradient. There is also step-free level access from the basement floor of the Nancy Rothwell Building. - Engineering Building B also has two identical key card activated entrances, which provide step-free level access to the ground floor.
One of the entrances leads into Core 5 and the other into Core 6. - The entrances are not named (just signed as Engineering Building B).
Getting Around
- There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors.
- However there is not internal access between Cores 5 and 6 on the ground and first floors.
- It may therefore be necessary to use a specific core lift to access some rooms on those floors.
- Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
- Overhead and wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.

- There are 6 toilets with adaptations.
- Toilets with adaptations are located on all floors.
- The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
- Ambulant toilet facilities are located in all male and female standard toilets.
- The male and female toilet facilities are located on the basement, first and second floors.

- Changing Places and baby changing facilities are available in the adjoining Engineering A Building.
Rooms and Services in the Building
Entrance (Core 6 - Key Card Only)
- This entrance is located in Rumford Street, opposite the east side of the Nancy Rothwell Building.
- The entrance area is clearly signed.
- There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
- There is step-free level access at the entrance.
- There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 95cm.
- There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
- The doors open towards you.
- The width of the opening is 210cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
- The doors have a medium visual contrast.
- The entrance to Core 5 is identical and is located to the left of this one, further along Rumford Street.
Lift (Core 6)
- The lift surveyed is located in a corridor just beyond the Core 6 entrance.
- The distance from Core 6 entrance is 13m.
- The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and manual doors.
- Basement, Ground, 1, 2 are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a high visual contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
- The external lift control buttons have a high visual contrast and tactile markings.
- All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The lift door opening width is 130cm.
- The internal dimensions of the lift are 148cm (width) x 260cm (depth).
- The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings.
- All of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- Internally the lift has: a mirror to aid reversing, a visual floor indicator and an audible announcer.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
Stairs (Core 6)
- The stairs surveyed are located just beyond the Core 6 entrance.
- Basement, Ground, 1 and 2 floors can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 20+ steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the step is between 15cm and 18cm .
- The height of the highest step is 17cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
