Overview

Getting Inside

  • There is step-free level access to the building if approaching from the south side, in between the Mansfield Cooper and Samuel Alexander buildings. There is a long slope with a slight gradient if approaching from the north side past the John Rylands Library.
  • There is a single entrance to the building, opposite the John Rylands Library.
  • The entrance is signed as Stephen Joseph Studio.
  • The entrance provides step-free level access to the ground floor.
  • There is a single circulation corridor on each of the ground and first floors.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access on the ground floor only.
  • There is only stepped access to the first floor.
  • The flooring in the stairwell on the ground is hard and smooth with a shiny finish.
    Floor surfaces along all circulation routes throughout other areas of the building are short pile carpet.

    • The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on the ground floor.

Entrance

  • This entrance is located to the right of the building, opposite the John Rylands Library.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.

  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door has a locked extension leaf.
  • The door opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 72cm.

  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 108cm.
  • There is a second set of double manual doors .
  • The second set of doors are permanently held open.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located on the left after the main entrance.
  • There is a single manual door to access the stairwell.
  • The ground floor and the first floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 19 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail on the right going up.
  • The handrail is not easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 18cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
  • The first flight of steps has a handrail on both sides.

Toilet with Adaptations (Ground Floor - Right Hand Transfer)

  • Location and Access View
    • The toilet surveyed is located within the male standard toilets on the ground floor.
    • The distance from the main entrance is 12m.
    • The most accessible route to the toilet has step-free level access, manual doors and narrow walkways.
    • There is step-free level access into the facility.
    • There is no signage on or near the door.
    • The door opens outwards and has a low visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening is 80cm.
    • The door has a locking handle.
    • Internally the door has a low visual contrast.
    • There is a grab rail on the internal door with a high visual contrast.
  • Dimensions and Features View
    • The dimensions of the cubicle are 132cm (width) x 154cm (depth) and there is not room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
    • There is a lateral transfer space to the right as you face the toilet, however it is obstructed.
    • The lateral transfer space is 80cm (from the side of the toilet pan).
