Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is via a slight slope.
  • There is a step-free slight sloped access to the left side of the main entrance, Alternatively there is step-free slight sloped access to the left of the building via the US Union of Students entrance.
  • There is a key card activated automatic double door available at the US Union of Students entrance.
  • The entrances are named as The University of Derby and US Union of Students.
  • The most accessible entrance, the US Union of Students, provides step-free access to the US Union of Students reception foyer and platform lift or other Atrium levels, via the lift opposite the reception desk.
  • The main entrance has stepped and ramped access.
  • The ground level does not have a main circulation corridor and gives access to shops and services via their own entrances.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on levels.
  • On the ground level there is a ramp with landing levels, giving access to level 1 and a further long ramp with landing levels giving access to level 2.
    Alternatively, there is a platform lift located on the ground level of US Union of Students.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth and some have a shiny surface.
  • There are resting areas in the circulation areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided is some areas of the Atrium.
  • There are no manual doors in any circulation areas.

    • Toilets with adaptations and standard toilets are located within the US Union of Students on level 2 of the Atrium.

Entrance (Main)

  • This entrance is located to the front of the Atrium.
  • The entrance area is not clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is ramped and stepped access at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a slight gradient.
  • The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide with a handrail that switches sides.
  • The ramp bypasses the steps.
  • There are 9 steps with handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The steps are clearly marked.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 16cm.
  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 106cm.
  • The key card to the left activates the automatic door, not the push pad.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open by sliding.
  • The width of the opening is 130cm.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 74cm.

Reception

  • The reception is located beyond the main entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 3m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 95cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 75cm.
  • There is a clearly signed fixed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested, however it was not working at the time of the survey.
  • There is background noise in this area which varies depending on the time of day.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
  • There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • Seating available in this area includes: chairs without armrests and sofas.
  • There are security barriers with a wider opening which are operated by key card.

Lift (Platform)

  • The lift surveyed is located on the ground floor of the UN Union of Students.
  • This lift is a platform lift.
  • The distance from the UN Student Union of Students entrance is 12m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • Ground, Mezzanine, Level 1 and Level 2 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a low visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • The lift door opening width is 91cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 108cm (width) x 140cm (depth).
