Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is uneven and may include obstacles such are electrical cabling and bollards.
  • Attenborough Building - Tower has three entrances.
  • The main entrance is the lift located at the front of the building.
  • Access to the main lift is via a platform lift which bypasses steep ramp with handrails on either side with a width between 75cm and 150cm or via six steps with a height of 18cm and handrails on each side.
  • The entrances are not signed.
  • The main lift provides access to floors 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18.
  • There is a door near to the lift that leads to the bottom of the main staircase on the ground floor.
  • There is a bridge linking the landing between the first and second floors in the Attenborough Building - Seminar Block with the second floor of Attenborough Building - Tower.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building except for access to floor 1 (staff only).
  • The lift does not provide access to floor 1.
  • Floor surfaces along some circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • Some surfaces in the building are carpeted.
  • There are not resting areas in the circulation routes. .
  • Overhead and wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There are manual doors in some corridor and lobby areas.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

    • There are 4 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on the floors 3, 6, 11 and 15.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • The male step-free standard toilet facilities are located on floors 2, 5, 8, 12, 14, 17 and 18.
    • The female step-free standard toilet facilities are located on floors 4, 7, 10, 13 and 16.

Lift (Platform Lift to Main Lift)

  • This lift is a platform lift.
  • The lift door has a low visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 280kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a low visual contrast.
  • Some of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 96cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 90cm (width) x 145cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a low visual contrast.

  • There are 15 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 18cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.

Toilet with Adaptations (Floor 3 - Left Hand Transfer)

    • The most accessible route to the toilet has step-free level access.
