Accommodation Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free level or step-free via very easy ramps or slight ramps.
  • The approach to the Langstone West Block is step-free level from the courtyard and the reception block.
    The approach from the West Block car park to the courtyard entrance is step-free via very easy ramp and a dropped kerb with tactile paving.
    The approach from the West Block car park to the rear entrance is step-free via slight ramp and a dropped kerb with tactile paving.
  • The Langstone West Block has 2 entrances, one is located at the front of the building off the courtyard and has key card reader activated automatic doors.
    The rear entrance is located at the rear of the building, off the West Block car park and has manual doors.
    Both entrances provide step-free access to the ground floor.
  • There is no distinguishing signage between the two entrances as both say 'West Block Flats'.
  • The accessible entrance off the courtyard provides step-free access via slight ramp to the ground floor flats 1, 2 and 3.
  • The rear entrance off the West Block car park provides step-free access via steep ramp to the stairwell area of the building.
    There is a second set of manual doors after the rear entrance to exit the stairwell area to get to the front of the building or to access flats 1-3.
    The doors are 156cm wide and open towards you.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on the ground floor only. There is stepped access to the first, second and third floors.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth with some having a shiny finish in the communal corridors. The individual flat corridors consist of carpet.
  • There are no resting areas in the main circulation corridors.
  • There is wall mounted signage available on all floors and in the stairwell.
  • There are manual doors to enter the individual flats and some manual doors in some of the circulation corridors on each floor. There are also manual doors to enter and exit the stairwell.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

    • The washroom facilities which have adaptations are located within Room 3.7 on the ground floor of the building.
    • Standard washroom facilities are located within all of the standard accommodation bedrooms.

Parking (West Block Car Park)

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located to the rear of the Langstone West Block.
    • The car park is open air/surface.
    • The car park surface consists of tarmac.
    • There is 1 designated Blue Badge parking bay available.
    • The Blue Badge bay has faded markings.
    • The surveyed Blue Badge parking bay dimensions are 233cm (width) x 467cm (depth).
    • There is a marked zone to one side but not at the rear.
    • The width of the marked zone is 87cm.
    • The nearest designated bay is 37m from the accessible entrance.
    • The most accessible route from the Blue Badge parking has a very easy ramp or slope and uneven surfaces.
    • There is a dropped kerb with tactile paving from the designated Blue Badge parking.
    • The Blue Badge parking bay is also 11m from the rear entrance.

    • This car park is for Blue Badge holders, staff permit holders and student permit holders only.

Entrance (Accessible Entrance)

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building, off the courtyard.
  • The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a slight gradient.
  • The ramp is over 150cm wide with no handrails.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 73cm.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 73cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 115cm.
  • There is a set of double manual doors immediately beyond the entrance to access the stairwell to the upper floors or the West Block car park via the rear entrance.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Entrance (Flat 3)

  • This entrance is located immediately to the right as you enter via the accessible entrance.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 112cm.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door has a locked extension leaf.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 67cm.
  • The door has a low visual contrast.

Bedroom and Ensuite with Adaptations (Room 3.7)

    • The most accessible route to the bedroom has step-free level access, automatic doors and narrow openings.

    • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 112cm.
    • The door opens inwards automatically and has a low visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening is 76cm.
  • Bedroom Features View
    • The bedroom has a single bed.
    • The top of the mattress is 54cm from the floor.
    • The space under the bed is 30cm from the floor.
    • There is not room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre next to the bed (150cm x 150cm).
    • The following is available in this bedroom: a chair without armrests and a desk.
    • There is no emergency alarm.

    • This bedroom does not have an adjoining room.
  • Ensuite Access View
    • There is step-free level access into the ensuite.
    • The ensuite door opens outwards and has a low visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening to the ensuite is 85cm.
    • Internally the door has a low visual contrast.
    • There is a grab rail on the internal door with a low visual contrast.
  • Ensuite Dimensions and Features View
    • The dimensions of the ensuite are 156cm (width) x 225cm (depth) and there is not room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
    • There is a lateral transfer space to the left as you face the toilet, however it is obstructed.
    • The lateral transfer space is 80cm (from the side of the toilet pan).
    • There is a spatula flush on the non-transfer side.
    • There is a horizontal grab rail on the non-transfer side.

  • The kitchen/dining area is located to the rear of Flat 3.
  • There is step-free level access into the kitchen/dining area.

  • The width of the opening is 67cm.
  • The height of the push pad to enter the kitchen is 111cm and the height of the push pad to exit is 113cm.
  • Furniture can be moved to enable a manoeuvring space for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The flooring is shiny.
  • The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
  • The work surface is 93cm from the floor.
  • A lowered work surface is available with a clear knee recess.
  • The lowered work surface is 68cm from the floor.
  • Overhead and under counter cupboards are available.
  • The hob is 93cm from the floor.
  • A lowered hob is not available.
  • The oven is at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The sink is 93cm from the floor.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located ahead and to the left as you enter via the accessible entrance.
  • There are double manual doors to access the stairwell.
  • The ground, first, second and third floors can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 17 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are not easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
