About
View
- The Neptune Building is a large building with 9 floors.
- There are 2 main lifts and one main staircase within the building.
- The floors are signed as Ground, First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth.
- The Ground to Fourth floors are occupied by the university and the Fifth to Eighth floors are used by the LSI (Language Specialists International). At the time of survey (April 2025), the Ground to Fourth floors were undergoing major refurbishment and were not in use. The building is still signed as the LSI building, however the name will be changing to Neptune in the future.
- There is not a toilet with adaptations available.

Getting Inside
- The approach to the Neptune Building is step-free via a very easy slope with some uneven surfaces from both directions along Hampshire Terrace and St Michael's Road.
- The Neptune Building has one entrance located at the front of the building, off Hampshire Terrace.
The entrance is step-free via slight ramp followed by a very easy slope as you enter the building
The entrance has double manual doors and gives access to the ground floor of the building. - The entrance is signed as 'LSI Portsmouth'.
- The entrance provides step-free access via slight slope to the entrance foyer on the ground floor.
Getting Around
- There is step-free level access throughout the majority of the building on all floors.
- On the Eighth floor, there is a single step without handrails to access Rooms 806 and 807.
The step has some clear markings.
Additionally, there is a single step down into rooms 806 and 807.
In this area there is a very narrow corridor which is only 65cm wide at its narrowest point and a door permanently held open. - There is a student lounge (Room 609) located on the Sixth floor which has double manual doors to access.
The width of the doors is 158cm. - Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and carpeted with a good colour contrast in all areas.
There are some narrow walkways throughout the teaching room corridors which are less than 120cm wide. - There are some resting areas on a few of the floors with a mixture of seating available.
- Wayfinding signage is provided in key areas of the building, particularly in the lift lobby areas on each floor.
- There are manual doors and doors permanently held open along all corridors of the building and to exit the lift lobby areas on each floor.

Toilet Facilities

- Ambulant toilet facilities are located within the male and female standard toilets on the ground floor, within the female standard toilets on the first floor and the female teachers only toilet on the third floor.
- The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on the ground, first, second, third, fourth and fifth floors.
- The female step-free toilet facilities are located on the seventh floor.
- The male step-free toilet facilities are located on the eighth floor.
- The gender inclusive toilet facilities are located on the sixth floor.
- The male and female standard toilet facilities located on the third floor are for teachers only. At the time of survey (April 2025), the standard toilets on the ground, first, second, third and fourth floors were not operational.

- Standard on-street parking is available along St Michael's Road. Blue Badge holders may park here for free when displaying their badge.
Entrance (Neptune Building/ LSI Portsmouth)
- This entrance is located at the front of the building, off Hampshire Terrace.
- The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces.
- The entrance area is clearly signed.
- There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The ramp has a slight gradient.
- The ramp is over 150cm wide with no handrails.
- There is an intercom at a height of 123cm.
- There are double manual doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
- The doors open towards you.
- The width of the opening is 90cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
- The doors have a low visual contrast.
- There is step-free access via a very easy slope as you enter.
Reception
- The reception is located to the left as you enter the building.
- The distance from the main entrance is 4m.
- There is step-free level access to reception.
- The height of the reception desk is 73cm.
- There is not a lowered section at the desk.
- There is not a hearing assistance system.
- There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
- At the time of survey (April 2025), the reception desk was not in use.
Lift (Lift A)
- The lift surveyed is located ahead and to the right as you enter the building.
- The distance from the main entrance is 8m.
- The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and doors permanently held open.
- The ground to eighth floors are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a high visual contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
- The weight limit for the lift is 600kg.
- The external lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a high visual contrast.
- All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The lift door opening width is 80cm.
- The internal dimensions of the lift are 111cm (width) x 152cm (depth).
- The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings and a medium visual contrast.
- Some of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- Internally the lift has: a mirror to aid reversing, a hearing assistance alarm system and a visual floor indicator.
- Lighting levels were low at the time of the survey.
- There are other lifts available at this location which are of a similar size.
- At the time of survey (April 2025) the lift was not operational. There is a similar lift opposite this one which was boarded out due to refurbishment at the time of survey.
Stairs
- The stairs surveyed are located to the left after the lift lobby area.
- There are permanently held open doors to access the stairwell.
- The ground to eighth floors can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 20+ steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked .
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 19cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
Standard Toilet Facilities (First Floor - Male and Female)
- The male and female standard toilet facilities were surveyed.
- The toilets are located on the first floor of the building, off the lift lobby area.
- The distance from the lift is 6m.
- The most accessible route has step-free level access and manual doors.
- There is step-free level access .
- There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
- The door opens inwards and has a high visual contrast.
- The width of the door opening is 83cm.
- Internally the door has a high visual contrast.
- There are ambulant toilet facilities available.
- The ambulant cubicle has a horizontal grab rail on the left.
- There is a wash basin, a wall mounted soap dispenser and a hand dryer available.
- The wash basin has a twist/turn tap.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
- There are 2 doors to access the toilets, the width of the second door is 80cm. The width of the door into the standard cubicles is 56cm. The width of the door into the ambulant cubicle is 79cm.
Standard Toilet Facilities (Fifth Floor - LSI - Male and Female)
- The male and female standard toilet facilities were surveyed.
- The toilets are located on the fifth floor of the building, to the left as you exit the lift.
- The distance from the lift is 6m.
- The most accessible route has step-free level access and manual doors.
- There is step-free level access into the toilets.
- There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
- The door opens inwards and has a high visual contrast.
- The width of the door opening is 65cm.
- Internally the door has a high visual contrast.
- There are no ambulant toilet facilities available.
- There is a wash basin, a wall mounted soap dispenser and a hand dryer available.
- The wash basin has a push tap.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
- There are 2 doors to access the standard toilets. The width of the second door into the toilets is 67cm. The width of the standard toilet cubicle is 57cm.
