Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to building is step-free via a very easy slope.
  • The Medical School has two entrances.
    Both entrances provide step-free access via a very easy slope with double automatic doors.
  • Both of the entrances are signed as Medical School. .
  • The main entrance is located at the front of the building and provides step-free access via a very easy slope to the reception foyer on level C.
  • The rear entrance provides access to level B but requires a key card to access. Both entrances have double automatic doors.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access via lift throughout the building on all floors.
  • On level F there is a steep ramp leading to Lecture Theatre 3.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • There are resting area in some circulation and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall mounted and overhead wayfinding signage is provided on all floors throughout the building.
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building. Some of the manual doors are accessed by a swipe card only.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 3 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on the main corridors on levels B, D and F.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • The male and female step-free standard toilet facilities are located on all levels.
  • Changing Places and Changing Facilities View
    • Parent and baby changing facilities are located within the accessible toilet on level B.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • Standard shower facilities are located on the level B corridor.

Parking

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located in front of the building.
    • The car park is open air/surface.

Entrance (Main Entrance)

  • This entrance is located in front of the building.

  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 102cm.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 150cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is also a manual revolving door at this entrance, to the right of the automatic doors.
  • The minimum width between the bollards is 140cm.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Reception

  • The reception is located ahead when entering the main entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 3m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 111cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 76cm.
  • The reception has patterned/distracting backgrounds.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • The flooring is shiny.
  • Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade and unshaded light sources.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located ahead when entering.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 17m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • The levels A, B, C, D, E, F and G are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 1350kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and Braille markings.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 100cm.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located to the rear left of the building.
  • There is a single manual door to access the stairwell.
  • The levels A, B, C, D, E, F and G can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps have faded markings and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are not easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.

Standard Shower Facilities (Level B - Unisex Shower)

  • The standard shower facilities surveyed are located on level B corridor.
  • The distance from the lift is 15m.
  • The most accessible route has step-free level access and doors permanently held open.
  • There is stepped access into the shower cubicle.
  • There are 2 steps with no handrails.
  • The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 19cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • The door opens inwards and has a high visual contrast.
  • The width of the door opening is 70cm.
  • Internally the door has a high visual contrast.
  • There is an adjustable shower head.
  • The shower controls are lever mixer.

Toilet with Adaptations (Level B - Right Hand Transfer)

    • The most accessible route to the toilet has step-free level access and doors permanently held open.
    • There is step-free level access into the facility.
    • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
    • The door opens outwards and has a high visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening is 85cm.
    • The door has a locking handle.
    • Internally the door has a high visual contrast.
    • There is not a grab rail on the internal door .
  • Dimensions and Features View
    • The dimensions of the cubicle are 155cm (width) x 190cm (depth) and there is not room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
    • There is a lateral transfer space to the right as you face the toilet, however it is obstructed.
